Checkendon Sports Club 1925 - 1955

I first joined the Sports Club in 1925 and in those days we played cricket in the 2nd Division Reading and District League and football in the Fourth Division League. In 1926I was elected Captain of the Cricket Club and in that year and also in the years 1930 and 1934 we won the League Cup and Medals. We found that League Cricket became too keen and gradually lost its taste for a Saturday afternoon sport so we decided to play friendly matches and still do. We did get runner up medals in 1937 and 1938 for football.

In 1948 I was elected Secretary, a position I still hold, of the Sports Club and with the help of the Parish Council, we set out to raise the sum of £1750 for the purchase and layout of our Recreation Ground. I am pleased to say all debts on the ground are now paid off. The tennis is a separate club.

Our football team has been doing very well and in 1953 1954 season they won the 4th Division Reading and District League Cup and were promoted to the 3rddivision. It is interesting to note that ten players in the team actually live in the village. A very rare thing in these days.
